2. Application of Powder Coating: Once the surface is clean and dry, the powder coating is applied. This is typically done using an electrostatic powder spray gun that charges the powder particles, allowing them to adhere to the grounded surface of the object. The powder can also be applied using fluidized bed dipping for some applications.
3. Curing: After application, the coated item is placed in a curing oven. The heat causes the powder to melt and flow into a smooth film, which then chemically reacts to form a hard, durable coating. The curing process usually takes place at temperatures between 350°F to 400°F (about 180°C to 200°C) for a specific duration depending on the type of powder used.
4. Cooling: After curing, the item is removed from the oven and allowed to cool. As it cools, the coating hardens and sets, providing a tough finish.
5. Inspection and Quality Control: Finally, the coated product is inspected for quality assurance. This may involve checking for uniformity, adhesion, and any defects in the finish.
Powder coating is popular because it offers a strong, resistant finish that is less susceptible to chipping, scratching, and fading compared to traditional liquid paints. Additionally, it is more environmentally friendly, as it produces fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
